The Tom Lantos Institute has implemented several non-formal educational initiatives to combat antisemitism. The Institute implemented the New World educational project in collaboration with the Haver Foundation and Lifeboat Unit in 2017 and 2018.
In 2019, the Tom Lantos Institute mapped out and categorised most educational projects focusing on the Holocaust, antisemitism, and Jewish history and culture that were implemented between 2014 and 2018 in Hungary. That same year, at an expert meeting, we presented the preliminary findings of the research aimed at developing an online database of educational initiatives in Hungary that address antisemitism. The online database designed for education experts was developed and launched in 2020 with the financial support of the European Union: SHALOMEDU.
In addition, the Institute started to work with experts to develop a teachers training programme that addresses antisemitism. In 2020, with the assistance of experts, we developed an educational programmme addressing antisemitism targeting secondary-school teachers and students. The project was launched in 2021 with a two-day workshop for teachers, and subsequently piloted and evaluated in seven educational institutions in Hungary.
The results of the evaluation were presented at an experience sharing workshop in Hungary as well as at a regional workshop, where informal guidelines were developed for designing similar educational initiatives in other Visegrád countries.
Both the database and the educational programme are co-funded by the European Union’s Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme (2014-2020).
