The New World educational package is a project co-organised the the Haver Foundation, the Lifeboat Unit (Mentőcsónak Egység) and the Tom Lantos Institute.
The fight against Antisemitism through education should be started at a young age. This is why the complex, informal educational project created by the Haver Foundation, the Lifeboat Unit (Mentőcsónak Egység) and the Tom Lantos Institute targets 16-18 year-old high school students. The project consists of three elements: the theatre play titled “New World” followed by an activity based on the tools of drama pedagogy, and a session dealing with Jewish identity, conducted by the Haver Foundation. The aim of the project is to combine the advantages of the methodologies of theatrical education, drama pedagogy and informal education to provide a complex educational project to high school students.
First, participants watch the play “New World” together. At the end of the performance the protagonist holds a closed box, and the girl who has just found out about her Jewish ancestry cannot make up her mind about the next step to take. The performance is followed by a conversation with the student audience about the issues raised in the play. In the next 2-3 weeks the volunteers of the Haver Foundation lead another session for the participating students, which takes the closed box at the end of the play as a starting point. This session focuses on what it means to be Jewish today and deals with the issues of the diverse manifestations of Jewish identity. The interval between the two conversations enables the students to reflect on the issues that emerged in the play, and gives them an opportunity to then discuss these and think about them further with the help of young volunteers from the Haver Foundation. Thus, the educational project applies various methodologies in order to contribute to intercultural dialogue and the fight against prejudices among high school students.
