The TLI book series aims to examine the effectiveness of the minority protection regime and to provide a platform to discuss major trends and challenges in the field of global minority protection.
In 2019, the book Noble Banner of Human Rights: Essays in Memory of Tom Lantos was published by Brill Publishers, in which leading experts commemorate the work of Tom Lantos in the field of human rights. The essays address current human rights issues, such as human rights education, religious freedom, minority rights, and identity politics. The launch for the publication took place in the Gala Hall of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences on January 31, 2019, with the participation of more than one hundred and fifty guests. The family and friends of Tom Lantos, ambassadors, representatives of diplomatic corps, members of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, international human and minority rights experts, and many representatives of Hungarian and American public life attended the event and paid tribute to the life and legacy of Tom Lantos. More details about the event can be found here.
In June 2019, the book Populism, Memory, and Minority Rights: Central and Eastern European Issues in a Global Perspective was presented to the public at the international conference “The post-1989 Springtime of National Minorities? Minority Mobilization, Human Rights Activism and the Accommodation of Ethno-cultural Diversity in Central, Eastern and Southeast Europe.”
Published in 2018 by Brill Publishers, the book examines crucial themes of regional and global importance on the accommodation of ethno-cultural diversity and related normative developments, while also presenting the work of the Tom Lantos Institute through theoretical and empirical studies, commentaries, interviews, and reports.
In 2020, the first chapter of the memorial book The Noble Banner of Human Rights – Essays in Memory of Tom Lantos, summarising the work of Tom Lantos in the field of human rights and his congressional career was translated into Hungarian. The chapter titled ’The Human Rights Legacy of Congressman Tom Lantos’ was authored by Robert R. King, former chief of staff of Tom Lantos and former US special envoy for North Korea human rights issues. Subsequently, in 2021, we published the book, "Az Emberi Jogok Lobogója Alatt" by Robert R. King, which is the Hungarian translation of the relevant parts of the original book, supplemented with Robert R. King's personal experiences in U.S.-Hungarian relations, such as the return of the Holy Crown to Hungary in 1978.
This was the first time that the life, work and human rights legacy of Tom Lantos, and the work of his former Chief of Staff in the field of Hungarian-American relations was presented in Hungarian, in great detail, and from such a personal point of view of his former Chief of Staff, Robert R. King.
The book launch event took place on September 22, 2022, at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. David Pressman, US Ambassador to Hungary and Former Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Dr. János Martonyi, the President of the Board of the Trustees of the Centre for Democracy Public Foundation, gave opening remarks at the event. The panel discussion with Ambassador King, Dr. Lantos-Swett, and Ambassador Swett was moderated by Dr. Tamás Magyarics, Professor of American Studies at ELTE University.
