In 2016, the Tom Lantos Institute began a research project on the UN Forum on Minority Issues. By analysing the discourses and strategies used by the principal actors of the Forum, the empirical study provides insight into the structure, dynamics and normative trends of the global governance of minority rights. The research helps understand identity politics in international relations and the role of global governance in securing the rights of national or ethnic, religious and linguistic minorities. The project is implemented in partnership with the Human Rights Consortium of the School of Advanced Studies, University of London.
As part of the project, an online database was developed to ensure that all documents related to the Forum, including statements made at the Forum, are searchable and accessible. Minority Forum Info is continuously updated and expanded. Currently, more than 1,800 statements are available. In addition, relevant UN documents related to minorities and the full documentation of the 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022 Regional Forums on Minority Issues have been uploaded. In addition, a list human and minority rights databases compiled by international, regional and non-governmental organisations and academic institutions, as well as guides on minority rights produced by international and non-governmental organisations, are available on the website. TLI also developed a video library containing relevant online presentations and webinars, and the recordings of the 2020, 2021 and 2022 Regional Forums.
