Our teacher training at the Jewish Federation of Pécs took place at the end of September and beginning of October. The training focused on a handbook published by the Tom Lantos Institute, which provides teachers with guidance on visiting the exhibition on the Jewry of Pécs and Baranya county with school classes.
The first teacher training event started with a short introduction of the Institute, followed by a lecture on the history of the Jewish population in Hungary until the 19th century led by university lecturer, Mariann Nagy. The day ended with a roundtable discussion on museum pedagogy and other alternative methods with which teachers can complete the curriculum. The participants shared their experiences and discussed the advantages and difficulties of different techniques.
The following week, the training continued with a session focused on the Jewry in Baranya County and the city of Pécs. István Károly Vörös’ presentation guided the participants through the history of coexistence in the region and also gave useful insight into various informal educational projects on Jewish identity. Finally, the participants had the chance to view the exhibition installed in the Synagogue of Pécs and ask related questions.
Although the content of the exhibition sets a high standard, its physical condition requires further restoration. We encourage everyone to visit the exhibition and if possible, contribute to its visual renewal. You can also do this on our website by clicking on our ‘Donate’ button.
